The diorama “Battle for the Dnieper-river”

The diorama “Battle for the Dnieper-river”, one of the biggest in the world, was inaugurated on the 7th of May, 1975. It was devoted to the 30th anniversary of victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War.
The canvas – its length being 60 meters, height – 14 meters, area – 840 square meters – was painted by H.V. But and N.V. Ovetchkin, Moscow artist of Military Club-studio named after M.B. Grekov, the honored artists of the Russian SFSR.
There is a foreground plan at the front of the canvas that turns into the picture. So a visitor becomes participant of the events. The angle of view is 2300 . The distance from the viewers platform to the canvas is 12 meters, a depth is 4 meters.
The diorama “Battle for the Dnieper-river” reveals the feat of the warriors who forced a crossing the Dnieper-river in the vicinity of the villages Voiskove-Vovnigi of Solonyanskiy district, Dniepropetrovsk region, in September-October 1943.
The battle for the Dnieper was an outstanding offensive operation during the Great Patriotic War.
Having captured bridgeheads on the right bank of the Dnieper the Soviet troops began a decisive assault and the cities of Dniepropetrovsk and Dnieprodzerzhynsk as well as other cities of the right-bank Ukraine were completely liberated.
The painters of the Diorama have pictured a crossing of the Dnieper river, air fighting, numerous feats of arms based on the documents and evidence of the participants and eyewitnesses of those events. Soldiers and officers representing different nationalities fought courageously on the Voiskove-Vovnigi bridgehead. Among them there were:
the captain of the Guard Vasil Dreval, the nurse Nelly Kozhukhova, the sapper Michael Balashov, the gunner Khasan Calandarov, the submachine-gunner Manuli Baturdinov and others.
84 soldiers and officers of the Red Army were bestowed the most prestigious title, “Hero of the Soviet Union”, for participation in forced crossing of the Dnieper-river in the vicinity of the villages of Voiskove and Vovnigi, in recognition of their velour.
