A museum of the history of development of local self-government in Dniepropetrovsk region (the department of Dniepropetrovsk historical museum named after D. Yavornitskiy)
Scientific research and scientific exposition departments of Dniepropetrovsk historical museum named after D. Yavornitskiy were set up in November 2007 for the purpose of making the museum of history of local self-government in Dniepropetrovsk region. Its draft was inaugurated in December 2008 in the edifice of Dniepropetrovsk regional council, to the address: Kirov avenue, 2. Dniepropetrovsk.
Foundation of the museum of history of local self-government in Dniepropetrovsk region was stimulated by the program of development of local self-government in Dniepropetrovsk region during 2007-2009 which was approved by the ninth session of the fifth conwocation of the Dniepropetrovsk regional Council.
The main idea of the museum is to elucidate personal aspect in the history of development of local self-government through historical events. This aspect will predominate in the disclosure of the topic.
An introduction of the museum are materials illustrating the city of Igren as a big commercial and trade centre which was situated on the territory of Dnieper Nadporishie in 11-13th centuries.
It is followed by the next themes:
Zaporozhian Sich (14th-18th centuries) as an original system of self-government.
Development of local self-government from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century (February, 1913)/
Zemstvo of Katerinoslav province, town council, the Council of the workers’, peasants’, soldiers’ deputies during the period of Ukrainian Revolution and political struggle of 1917-1920s.
Vitality of the democratic authorities.

Museum “Literary Pridneprovye”

There is one of the oldest buildings carrying the memory of different epochs in the main avenue of Dniepropetrovsk. Citizens call it Insov’s house, and during recent years they have called it museum “Literary Pridneprovye”. This house was built in the early 19th century for Tutorial Committee of foreing settlers, activity of which is closely connected with the name of well-known public figures: S.H. Kontenins, I.M. Insov, A.M. Fadeyeva. In 1820 Insov office was visited by O. Pushkin who had been sent here for job.
The next period of Insov’s house history since the middle of 1830ies is associated with development of education in Pridneprovie. It housed the local school.
This edifice was built on between 1886 and 1890. in 1901 the building housed the supreme government’s primary school, in 1910 – City college. At the beginning of the century the literary-actors’ society named after Gogol was located here. The painter M.S. Pogrybnyak had been a teacher of graphic arts here since 1908. The poet M.A. Svetlov had got an education at this college during those years. During 1920ies Insov’s house housed I. Franko Ukrainian school and courses. V. Pidmogilniy, one of the first representatives of existentialism in Ukraine, had taughthere during 1919-1920. Among the best achievements are his novels “The city”, “The small drama”, “A story without a title”. In 1930ies the building housed the professional and technical school, colleges, factory and technical training schools, urban development office.
In 1949 the memorial plague dedicated to O.S. Pushkin (by sculptures S.A> Ogiy and G.P Levchuk) was placed on the facade of the house, in 1963 it was rebuilt.
In 1985 creating of the museum “Literary Pridneprovye” begun. On its first stage research work and collecting of collections was held. Repair and restoration of the building was started since 1988.
The museum was inaugurated on May 24, 1998. Today it implements its program activity in unusual circumstances. Its first floor is devoted to literary exhibitions, the second which is not still repaired became a museum laboratory, a place where various cultural events take place. Every year the museum creates 20-25 literary and cultural exhibitions, holds up about 70 literary and musical parties.
The exhibitions devoted to T. Shevchenko, I.I. Manzhura, V.P. Pidmogilniy, M.O. Voloshine, V.P. Domopntovich, O.S. Pushkin, G.S. Masurenko, M.I. Zhuk, O.G. Sokulsky, O.I. Gonchar, D.I. Yavornitskiy. Pridneprovie tales, “Rapids” literary miscellany were of conciderable value. Series of exhibitions dedicated to works by artists, photographers, folk artists are being created. Some amateur studious, clubs, among them – literary amateur studio “Lileya” and the club of young writers-visionaries, philosophers’ club have been working here every week during recent years. Museum considers its work with youth to the priority in all spheres of its activity.
The museum “Literary Pridneprovye”, a young child of the Dniepropetrovsk historical museum named after D. Yavornitskiy, has taken its place, formed its concept of activity, it has its image and takes its place in culture. The famous in our city Insov’s house becomes increasingly known as the literary museum.

Museum centre of O. Blavatska and her family

Department of the Dniepropetrovsk historical museum named after D. Yavornitskiy.
In 2005 at the Dniepropetrovsk historical museum named after D. Yavornitskiy creating the museum centre devoted to the well-known person O.Blavatska, born in Katerinoslav-Dniepropetrovsk, and unique dynasty, which she belonged to, begun.
A new museum is being created in the ancient city noble estate having belonged to A.M. Fadeyev, who was Blavatska’s grandfather, a statesman and public figure, and his wife O.P. Fadeyeva, a scientist-naturalist.
Here the childhood and youth of the writer O.Gan, who was this married couple’s elder daughter, passed. Here their son P.A. Fadeyev, a general, journalist, public figure, and their younger daughters K.A. Vitte and N.A. Fadeyeva were born. Fadeyevs’ grandchildren, among them – the writer V.P. Zhelihovska and the statesman S.U. Vitte, were prominent personalities.
In 1831 at this Katerinoslav mansion Olena Petrivna Blavatska, Fadeyevs’ granddaughter, O.A. and P.A. Gans’ daughter, was born. Olena Petrivna was the ancient teachings researcher, creator of the International Theosophical society.
The heritage by O. Blavatska had a deep impact upon the activity of prominent representatives of the world science, art, literature and politics. In the process of emancipation of thinking her expression “no religion is higher than truth” is becoming clearer to many people of the world. But today it’s no doubt that the Motherland has to think over the ideas of this lady-torch.
The Dniepropetrovsk museum centre will become the centre of studying heritage by O.P Blavatska and her family. D.I. Yavornitskiy began collecting artifacts of the future museum.
Since 1990 this work had been continued by historical museum staff and working with it initiator group on the voluntary basis. In 2005-2006 the building which was in the critical conditions was transferred to the historical museum. Comprehensive historical and architectural research work had begun, a restoration draft of Fadeyev’s house was made. At the same time the scientific work goes on. The future museum collection numbers over nine thousand items. It includes memorial articles, lifetime editions of books and papers of family members. Museum collection possesses scientific publications and literary works by O. Blavatska in different languages of 19th-21stcenturies, works by her followers and researchers. Scientific conception of the museum had been tested in international scientific forums.
Exhibition-presentations are displayed at museums of Ukraine during last years.
According to the program “The museum from the zero cycle” there is a “pilot” exhibition in three rooms of the house. Based on operating conditions, it has an experimental character and it is built on the base of the copies of those unique materials which are help at museum. Exhibition of three large sections describes the fate and legacy of O.P. Blavatska, the creative activity of her dynasty members, the scientific conception and progress to establish Museum centre of O. Blavatska and her family. Specialists, creating the museum, conduct meetings, tours and consultations. Topical meetings, video-film watching are organized for museum visitors. The scientific library works.

The diorama “Battle for the Dnieper-river”

The diorama “Battle for the Dnieper-river”, one of the biggest in the world, was inaugurated on the 7th of May, 1975. It was devoted to the 30th anniversary of victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War.
The canvas – its length being 60 meters, height – 14 meters, area – 840 square meters – was painted by H.V. But and N.V. Ovetchkin, Moscow artist of Military Club-studio named after M.B. Grekov, the honored artists of the Russian SFSR.
There is a foreground plan at the front of the canvas that turns into the picture. So a visitor becomes participant of the events. The angle of view is 2300 . The distance from the viewers platform to the canvas is 12 meters, a depth is 4 meters.
The diorama “Battle for the Dnieper-river” reveals the feat of the warriors who forced a crossing the Dnieper-river in the vicinity of the villages Voiskove-Vovnigi of Solonyanskiy district, Dniepropetrovsk region, in September-October 1943.
The battle for the Dnieper was an outstanding offensive operation during the Great Patriotic War.
Having captured bridgeheads on the right bank of the Dnieper the Soviet troops began a decisive assault and the cities of Dniepropetrovsk and Dnieprodzerzhynsk as well as other cities of the right-bank Ukraine were completely liberated.
The painters of the Diorama have pictured a crossing of the Dnieper river, air fighting, numerous feats of arms based on the documents and evidence of the participants and eyewitnesses of those events. Soldiers and officers representing different nationalities fought courageously on the Voiskove-Vovnigi bridgehead. Among them there were:
the captain of the Guard Vasil Dreval, the nurse Nelly Kozhukhova, the sapper Michael Balashov, the gunner Khasan Calandarov, the submachine-gunner Manuli Baturdinov and others.
84 soldiers and officers of the Red Army were bestowed the most prestigious title, “Hero of the Soviet Union”, for participation in forced crossing of the Dnieper-river in the vicinity of the villages of Voiskove and Vovnigi, in recognition of their velour.

D. Yavornitskiy memorial museum-house

In the picturesque nook over the Dnieper-river, there is “untouched Cossacks’ father’s kurin”, D. Yavornitskiy memorial museum-house. It was in this house that D. Yavornitskiy had lived 35 years of his life (1905-1940).
D.I. Yavornitskiy (1855-1940( was a remarkably versatile scholar, cultural and public figure, enlightener, one of the most authoritative historian of the Zaporozhian Sich, founder of the Dniepropetorvsk historical and art museum, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine. He was an archeologist, ethnographer, folkloric, writer, poet, lexicographer rolled into one.
This house was erected in 1905 by the project of architect l. Brodnitskiy. Its lay-out didn’t change. The visitors may see a vestibule, hall, dining-room, study, guests’ room. The interiors of these rooms remained unchanged.
The visitors’ acquaintance with the museum begins from the vestibule decorated with murals creates by artists M. Strunnikov and I. Tkachenko (1920). In the house there are D. Yavornitskiy’s personal belongings, furniture dated back to the late 19th-early 20th century, pictures by famous artists. Here the visitors may learn about this scholar’s life, his thoughts and dreams, how he had suffered and rejoiced at. D. Yavornitskiy was called Zaporozhian Nestor.
In one of the room there is a permanent show-room where the exhibitions from the Ukrainian state museum and private collections are displayed.
Behind the house there are trees and plants glorified in the Ukrainian folk songs and ballads.
Dear guests, come into the light quiet room of this museum, green, picturesque small garden and you will feel yourselves in the “heart” of the Ukraine, you will feel the fragrance of herbs and flowers of Pridneprovyen free Steppes. Everything in this house-museum reminds of the inimitable traits of Yavornitskiy’s personality, his titanic work for his Motherland’s and people’s benefit. We have been becoming his contemporaries for an instant and thus understand him better.
Different museum parties concerning particular subjects, meetings, scientific conferences, book presentation, master-classes, competitions are arranged at this museum. Our visitors may take part in them.
